Plastic: Remaking Our World

Plastic: Remaking Our World (Plástico: Reconstruir o Nosso Mundo) was presented in the MAAT Gallery in Lisbon from 22 March to 11 September 2023, produced in partnership with Vitra Design Museum and V&A Dundee. GGS Productions was responsible for the audiovisual installation of the MAAT edition.

Visitors meet plastic through film and through things. A film installation opens the show, followed by a historical sequence of designed objects, graphics, fashion and architecture, and by contemporary proposals for rethinking the material. Moving images and displays sit among product design and archive material, so the audiovisual layer and the physical exhibition tell one story from two sides.

02 / The story

The story

The exhibition follows plastic across more than 150 years: first hailed as an alternative to natural resources, then a foundation of mass production and disposable culture, and now a source of pressing environmental harm. Design sits at the centre of that history, as the discipline that brought plastic into everyday life and the one now asked to imagine alternatives, lower production and consumption, and reuse. The MAAT edition followed earlier presentations at Vitra Design Museum in 2022 and V&A Dundee in 2022–23.
