The story
Jonathas de Andrade (born in Maceió, 1982, and based in Recife) has built a collaborative practice around the northeast of Brazil, questioning the promises and failures of utopias and world views through work on labour, contemporary identity, nostalgia, eroticism and historical and political tension. Olho-Faísca, co-produced by MAAT and CRAC Alsace, where it was first shown in summer 2022, surveys that trajectory across media and shifts its emphasis: the male body, long a vehicle for those other concerns, becomes the explicit subject, and the earlier work is read through a homoerotic gaze.
